What to see in Soave: the Scaliger Castle and historic sights

A Journey Through Soave: From the Majestic Castle to Ancient Treasures

The castle of Soave was built at the beginning of the 10th century to defend against the Hungarians. The walls that embrace the city, however, were built in the fourteenth century by Cansignorio della Scala.

The castle is composed of three courtyards; in the first, there are the remains of an ancient Romanesque church. In the second, there is a fresco in which the Madonna protects the people under her cloak. In the third, the imposing keep rises, and there are the guards' quarters and the Captain's rooms.

From these rooms, it is possible to climb onto the patrol walkways and reach the top of the Keep, from which you can enjoy a spectacular view of the surrounding area.

The Scaliger Palace was built in the fourteenth century by order of Cansignorio della Scala and was the ancient residence of the Governors of Soave.

During the Venetian era, it became the residence of the Captains of the Serenissima.

Currently, the building houses the Municipality offices, and the beautiful garden located next to this Palace also belongs to the municipality of Soave.

The church of Santa Maria dei Domenicani was built during the fifteenth century in Romanesque style.

The interior has a single nave with one chapel dedicated to Saint Lucy and one to Saint Apollonia.

The church is used for exhibitions and displays, while the nearby convent is used as a public library.

The Church of San Giorgio was built in the thirteenth century by order of the Franciscan friars.

On the facade, there is a bas-relief of Saint George killing the dragon. The style of the church and the bell tower are simple and rugged.

The internal frescoes have been lost over the centuries, while from the center of the ceiling hangs the tail of a prehistoric animal.
