Montegrotto Terme is a charming spa town located in the province of Padua, Veneto. As its name suggests, it is globally renowned for its thermal baths dating back to ancient times. However, its commitment to physical well-being is also beautifully reflected in the multitude of green spaces and gardens that adorn the town.
While history enthusiasts can admire the remains of the ancient Roman Baths, visitors can also dive into the future at a cutting-edge modern facility. In 2014, this specific pool earned Montegrotto a spot in the Guinness World Records as the deepest swimming pool in the world.
Originally named San Pietro Montagnon, the town adopted its current name in 1934. Montegrotto derives from the Latin “mons aegrotorum”, meaning “mountain of the sick”—a clear reference to the many patients who visited the area to benefit from the healing properties of its waters.
First inhabited by the ancient Veneti, the town experienced a major boom under Roman rule, which saw the construction of both thermal complexes and magnificent villas. During the Middle Ages, it became a fiefdom of the Da Montagnone family, who built a castle that was later destroyed.
The territory then passed to the Carraresi family and, following their fall, under the rule of Venice. The Venetians extensively renovated the thermal facilities, making them famous throughout Europe, and built their own prestigious holiday villas here.
The exploitation of Montegrotto's thermal waters dates back as far as the Iron Age. The earliest facilities had a religious significance, as the ancient Veneti attributed the origin of these healing waters to the gods. Cured patients would thank the god Aponus by throwing small voter sculptures into a sacred lake.
In 1780, Giovan Antonio Dondi Orologio unearthed three pool basins decorated with mosaics along with several marble floors. These pools were interconnected by a sophisticated system of channels for water drainage. The recreational purpose of the ancient spa was also highlighted by the presence of relaxation areas and a small theater.
Today, Montegrotto stands as a world-class thermal center of excellence, constantly driving research and innovation in both spa wellness and therapeutic treatments.
