Padua Province Guide: Hidden Castles, Venetian Villas, and Euganean Wonders

The Province of Padua is the most populous in the Veneto region and comprises 104 unique municipalities. Its territory is woven with several historic waterways, including the Adige, Bacchiglione, Brenta, and Sile rivers, and it is completely flat with the sole exception of the spectacular Euganean Hills.

These unique reliefs of volcanic origin take their name from the ancient Euganei people who inhabited these lands long before the Veneti. Today, the term "Euganean" is also widely used as a warm synonym for "Paduan."

Historically, this province was deeply tied to the infamous Ezzelini family—a noble dynasty of German origin that went down in history not only for expanding its rule over Treviso, Belluno, Mantova, Brescia, and Trento, but especially for its notorious reputation for violence and cruelty.

The Province of Padua is incredibly rich in art, as showcased by its many diverse museums, ranging from traditional fine art collections to highly unusual exhibits. For instance, the Butterfly Arc—a "living" museum in Montegrotto Terme—allows you to admire rare butterflies from all over the world, while Esapolis in Padua reveals the hidden secrets of countless insects. The Museum of the Bacchiglione River in Cervarese Santa Croce features fascinating medieval boats, while the River Navigation Museum in Battaglia Terme introduces visitors to the famous traditional "burci" river barges. And these are just a few hidden gems worth exploring!

History lovers will find no shortage of majestic medieval castles (in Lozzo Atestino, Battaglia Terme, Monselice...) and spectacular, preserved walled cities (Este and Montagnana, to name just two). The landscape is also beautifully adorned by numerous historic Venetian Villas (such as Villa Contarini in Piazzola sul Brenta, Villa Cornaro in Piombino Dese, and Villa dei Vescovi in Torreglia). In fact, the ultimate master architect of these Venetian Villas, Andrea Palladio, was born right here in Padua.

Nature enthusiasts can explore countless parks, protected areas, and natural oases across the province. First and foremost is the iconic Botanical Garden (Orto Botanico) of Padua, a proud UNESCO World Heritage Site. Then there is the stunning Euganean Hills Regional Park, the Onara Marsh Park, and the Valle Millecampi Park, which uniquely lets you admire a scenic slice of the Venetian lagoon on Paduan soil. Additionally, Laghetto della Costa in Arquà Petrarca is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site along with other prehistoric pile-dwelling sites around the Alps.

The local flora primarily consists of holm oaks, strawberry trees, junipers, wild broom, chestnut trees, and sturdy oaks. The black locust (robinia) is also highly widespread—a plant originally native to North America that has completely replaced native chestnut and oak woods in several areas.

The wildlife is dominated by small mammals like stone martens, foxes, and badgers, while pheasants, quails, and hawks are common among birds. Recently, the wild boar was illegally introduced for hunting purposes, and unfortunately, its rapid proliferation is causing significant damage to local crops. Among the rarest species to spot, look out for the Euganean Hills tortoise and the unique Padua rue (ruta padovana).

Although the Province of Padua is less renowned for wine production compared to its neighbors Treviso and Verona, it produces equally outstanding varieties such as Merlot, red and rosé Raboso, Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso, Raboso Passito, Serprino, Tai, and Moscato.

In fact, boutique wines from the Euganean Hills frequently win prestigious national and international awards.
