Bibione: A Vacation Between Sea, Thermal Spas, and Nature
Bibione is one of the most famous beach resorts along the Adriatic Coast. Its international fame stems not only from its long, golden beach of fine sand, but also from its surrounding lagoon, historic fishing valleys, and lush pine forests. Its well-equipped beach satisfies every traveler's desire, offering relaxation alongside sports, entertainment, and outdoor activities.
However, Bibione is much more than just a seaside holiday spot. It offers scenic walking and cycling trails through quiet woodlands and the wetlands of the lagoon. Here, nature lovers can spot mute swans, grey herons, black-winged stilts, and rare species of wild orchids.
For years, this resort town has consistently been awarded the prestigious Blue Flag. This accolade reflects the exceptional care devoted to bathing water quality, clean beaches, and top-tier tourist services. Yet seawater is not the only water that makes Bibione famous—its therapeutic thermal spa waters are equally celebrated.
Around 1960, the energy company Agip conducted geological surveys in the lower Po Valley searching for oil. These inspections unexpectedly revealed deep hyperthermal waters. Gushing from a depth of 500 meters at a temperature of 52°C (125°F), the thermal complex was built after scientific analyses confirmed the water's remarkable healing properties.
Over the years, the facility expanded to include a solarium, wellness Spa, thermal pools, and a hydrokinesitherapy unit dedicated to thermal water rehabilitation for neurological and orthopedic conditions.
A River Unlike Any Other in the World: The Tagliamento
San Michele and Latisana are the only two towns directly overlooking the Tagliamento River. Its name stems from "telia" (linden tree), meaning it likely signifies "river lined with linden trees." It was first recorded as "Tiliaventum" in Pliny the Elder's Naturalis Historia.
This river is crowned the "King of Alpine Rivers" due to its extraordinary uniqueness. It is the only major Alpine river—and one of the very few in Europe—to preserve a braided river morphology. This means it possesses a vast gravel bed crisscrossed by multiple interconnected channels that form lush vegetated islands and gravel bars.
Furthermore, the Tagliamento boasts another rare title: it is the last wild, morphologically intact river in the Alps. Human intervention along its channel has been virtually non-existent. Because of its near-pristine natural state, it is studied by universities across the globe.
Along its course, visitors can observe the phenomenon of "de-alpinization," where mountain and lowland habitats directly merge. This allows mountain plant species typical of alpine screes to thrive right down in the plains.
Along the banks of the Tagliamento, you can spot wildlife species—such as foxes, kestrels, and stone martens—that have vanished from much of the surrounding Po Valley where human activity took over. It is also a sanctuary for the rare marble trout, though this native species unfortunately faces genetic risk from introduced brown trout.
